Thomas McDaniels Chief of Staff U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration
Thomas C. McDaniels, Jr. was appointed TSA’s Chief of Staff in
December 2012.
As Chief of Staff, McDaniels serves as a liaison with Administration
and Department of Homeland Security officials and advises the TSA Administrator and other members of TSA’s senior leadership on
matters related to public and legislative affairs, policy, and strategic planning. Additionally, McDaniels serves as the Senior Accountability Official for Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Office of Inspector General (OIG) audits and manages the Audit Liaison and Executive Secretariat functions for TSA. Through the management of these functions, McDaniels is responsible for coordinating TSA actions in responding to audits performed by GAO and OIG and for driving the coordination and sharing of decision-making information necessary to accomplish the TSA mission.
Prior to joining TSA, McDaniels was Chief of Staff for the Honorable Frederica Wilson, United States House of Representatives, serving as Chief Policy Advisor and Staff Director. From 2008-2011, McDaniels was Staff Director for the Committee on Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Transportation Security in the U.S. House of Representatives. In this role, he was the senior policy advisor for aviation security issues and a principal author
of the Transportation Security Administration Authorization Act of 2009. As the Federal and State Legislative Coordinator for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department from 2003-2008, he organized Federal and State legislative and policy efforts for Miami International Airport and several general aviation airports. McDaniels was also Washington Chief of Staff for the Honorable Barbara Lee and Legislative Director for the Honorable Corrine
Brown, a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to working on Capitol Hill, McDaniels was a staff member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses during the Clinton Administration. McDaniels is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as Navigator and Communications Officer aboard the USS Pyro (AE 24) which was stationed in the San Francisco Bay Area
before its decommissioning in 1994.

McDaniels holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of  Pennsylvania. He received a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Miami in 2007.
